Florida is a city and commune located in the Concepción Province of the Biobío Region in central Chile. It lies roughly 30 kilometres (19 mi) northeast of the regional capital, Concepción, and is situated on the left bank of the Claro River.
Geography
The commune covers an area of approximately 495 km² (191 sq mi). The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and agricultural land, and the climate is temperate Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
History
Florida was founded in the late 19th century during a period of expansion of the railway network in southern Chile. The arrival of the railway contributed to the settlement’s growth, and it was officially recognized as a commune in 1904.
Demographics
According to the 2002 census conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the commune had a population of 21,226 inhabitants, of whom 11,275 lived in urban areas and 9,951 in rural areas. Economy
The local economy historically centered on agriculture, livestock, and textile manufacturing. Florida is noted for its textile industry, particularly the production of yarns and fabrics that have been distributed throughout Chile.
