The area that would become Florence was originally known as "Crossroads" due to the intersection of two major roads: the Covington-Lexington Turnpike and the Burlington Pike. The community began to develop around this crossroads in the early 19th century. In 1821, the town was formally named Florence, reportedly after Florence, Italy, or a local resident named Florence. Growth was slow but steady through the 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily as an agricultural and trading center. The construction of Interstate 71/75 in the mid-20th century significantly impacted Florence, transforming it from a small rural community into a rapidly growing suburban and commercial hub due to its strategic location along the major transportation corridor. A notable landmark, the "Florence Y'all" water tower, was originally intended to read "Florence Mall" but was modified to "Florence Y'all" when it was realized the full text would exceed the permitted letter size.
