Flavors of Youth

Definition
Flavors of Youth is a 2018 Chinese‑Japanese animated anthology film that depicts three separate, loosely connected stories about young people whose memories and emotions are evoked through food.

Overview
The film was co‑produced by CoMix Wave Films (Japan), Haoliners Animation (China) and Coloroom Pictures. It premiered at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in August 2018 and was subsequently released in Chinese theaters on 21 June 2018, in Japan on 13 July 2018, and later received limited theatrical and streaming distribution in North America. The project employed computer‑generated (CG) animation and was directed by a trio of filmmakers: Li Haoling, Jia Cheng and Zhao Liang, each overseeing one of the three segments. The runtime is approximately 84 minutes.

The narrative structure consists of three vignettes, each set in a different Chinese city and focusing on the sensory experience of food as a conduit for recalling youthful moments:

  1. “The Ice Cream Truck” – Set in Beijing, it follows a teenage boy who becomes enamoured with an ice‑cream vendor and later reflects on that fleeting romance.
  2. “Love” – Set in Shanghai, it portrays a young couple navigating a relationship through the preparation and sharing of a traditional dish.
  3. “The Scent” – Set in Guangzhou, it centers on a girl whose childhood memories are triggered by the aroma of a particular street snack.

Across the segments, the film explores themes of nostalgia, the passage of time, and the emotional resonance of culinary culture.

Etymology / Origin
The English title is a direct translation of the original Mandarin name 青春的味道 (Qīngchūn de wèidào), which literally means “the taste of youth.” The phrase encapsulates the film’s focus on how taste and smell can summon memories of one’s younger years. No alternative historical usage of the phrase has been documented prior to the film’s production.
