Flag of Querétaro

The flag of the Mexican state of Querétaro is a white rectangular banner that bears the coat of arms of Querétaro in its centre.

Design

• Field: Plain white.
• Charges: The state coat of arms, which is a shield divided into four quarters:
  1. Upper‑left – a silver (white) castle on a red background, representing the historic Spanish settlement.
  2. Upper‑right – a golden lion on a blue field, symbolising the kingdom of León and the region’s colonial heritage.
  3. Lower‑left – a silver (white) cross on a green field, signifying the Christian faith and the area’s agricultural character.
  4. Lower‑right – a golden sun with rays on a black background, referring to the region’s indigenous roots and the “sun of the new world.”
• Other elements: Around the shield are the words “ESTADO LIBRE Y SOBERANO DE QUERÉTARO” (Free and Sovereign State of Querétaro) and a laurel wreath.

Proportions: The official specifications set the flag’s proportion at 4:7 (height to width).

Adoption
The flag was formally adopted by the State Congress of Querétaro in 1996 under the Ley de la Bandera del Estado (State Flag Law). The law codifies the design, colours, dimensions, and the manner of display.

Symbolism
