Flag of Ethiopia

Definition The Flag of Ethiopia is the national flag representing the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, used to symbolize the country's sovereignty, identity, and unity.

Overview The current national flag of Ethiopia was officially adopted on 31 October 1996, following the adoption of a new constitution that established the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia after the fall of the Derg regime in 1991. The flag is utilized by the federal government and represents Ethiopia in international diplomatic, political, and cultural contexts. It reflects modifications from earlier Ethiopian national flags, which historically featured a green, yellow, and red tricolor with a central emblem.

Etymology/Origin The colors green, yellow, and red have deep historical roots in Ethiopian symbolism and have been associated with the Ethiopian state since the late 19th century. These colors were officially standardized during the reign of Emperor Menelik II and became widely recognized as Pan-African colors, influencing the flags of many African nations post-independence. The 1996 flag design emerged from constitutional reforms following political restructuring in Ethiopia after 1991.

Characteristics The flag consists of a horizontal tricolor of green (top), yellow (middle), and red (bottom), with equal-sized bands. Centered on the flag is a blue disc containing a yellow five-pointed star surrounded by five equal pairs of rays emanating outward. The star symbolizes the unity and diversity of Ethiopia's ethnic groups, while the rays represent equality and peace. The green, yellow, and red tricolor retains the traditional colors long associated with Ethiopia, with green symbolizing the land and fertility, yellow standing for peace and mineral wealth, and red denoting strength and sacrifice. The blue disc represents peace.

While earlier versions of the Ethiopian flag featured the Ethiopian coat of arms or the Lion of Judah (notably during the imperial era), the current design excludes monarchical symbols, aligning with the secular and federal structure of the modern state.
