Fiyoaree is an inhabited island located in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, which is part of the larger Huvadhu Atoll in the Republic of Maldives. Situated in the southern region of the Maldivian archipelago, it serves as one of the administrative islands within its atoll division.
The island is primarily known for its historical and cultural role in the production of traditional Maldivian hand-woven mats, known as thundu kunaa. Fiyoaree is the principal source of the raw material used for these mats: a species of local sedge known as hau (Cyperus pangorei). The reeds are cultivated in the island’s marshy areas, harvested, dried, and often dyed using natural pigments. While the weaving of the mats is historically centered on the neighboring island of Gadhdhoo, Fiyoaree remains the primary center for the agricultural cultivation and initial processing of the reeds.
Economically, the island's population relies on a combination of fishing, agriculture, and the specialized trade of hau. Geographically, the island features a reef system and a lagoon environment typical of the Maldivian atolls. Administratively, it is governed by an elected Island Council under the decentralization laws of the Maldives. In recent years, the island has been the site of various infrastructure projects, including harbor developments and environmental conservation efforts related to its unique wetlands.
