Fix-Saint-Geneys (French pronunciation: [fiks sɛ̃ ʒənɛ]; Occitan: Fins-Sent-Genèis) is a commune in the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-central France.
Geography and Location
The commune is situated at an average elevation of approximately 1,112 meters (3,648 feet) on a historic mountain pass that once marked the border between the Velay and Auvergne regions. It covers an area of 7.91 square kilometers (3.05 sq mi) and is traversed by Route Nationale 102. Its coordinates are 45°08′37″N 3°40′06″E.
Administration
Fix-Saint-Geneys belongs to the arrondissement of Le Puy-en-Velay and the canton of Saint-Paulien. It is part of the Communauté d'agglomération du Puy-en-Velay. As of the 2020–2026 term, the mayor is Jean-François Gallien.
Demographics
The commune has a small and fluctuating population. In 1968, the population was 269; by 2023, it had declined to 143 inhabitants, reflecting a long-term rural depopulation trend common to many remote French communes. The population density is approximately 18.1 inhabitants per square kilometer.
History
Historically, the settlement was known as Saint-Geneys de Fix (Fixhaut). During the French Revolution in 1792, it was renamed Fix La Montagne, then Fix le Haut, and eventually Fix-Saint-Geneys. In 1858, a portion of Fix-Villeneuve along with the hamlets of Veyrac, Aubaron, and La Bastide were attached to Fix-Haut to form the present-day commune.
