Description
Fissiscapus is a genus of small, sheet‑web‑building spiders belonging to the family Linyphiidae, commonly referred to as dwarf spiders. Members of this genus are part of the South American spider fauna and exhibit the typical morphological traits of linyphiids, such as a compact body and relatively long, delicate legs adapted for constructing horizontal sheet webs close to the ground or in leaf litter.
Discovery and nomenclature
The genus was first described in 1991 by British arachnologist Alfred Frank Millidge in his work on South American linyphiid spiders. The type species designated for the genus is Fissiscapus pusillus Millidge, 1991. The generic name “Fissiscapus” derives from Latin roots—fissus meaning “split” or “cleft” and scapus meaning “stalk” or “shaft”—likely referencing a distinctive morphological feature of the male palpal organ, although the original description does not elaborate on the etymology.
Species composition
As of the most recent taxonomic update (May 2019), the genus contains three recognized species:
- Fissiscapus attercop Miller, 2007 – recorded from Ecuador.
- Fissiscapus fractus Millidge, 1991 – recorded from Colombia.
- Fissiscapus pusillus Millidge, 1991 – recorded from Colombia.
All three species are known only from their type localities in the Andean regions of Colombia and Ecuador, and no additional species have been described since the 2019 catalog update.
Distribution and habitat
Fissiscapus species are endemic to the northern Andes of South America. They inhabit montane forest ecosystems, typically occupying leaf litter, low vegetation, and understory microhabitats where they construct their characteristic sheet webs. Their limited geographic range reflects the overall diversity pattern of many Linyphiidae genera, which often display high endemism in tropical montane environments.

Research status
The genus is considered a taxonomic “stub” in the scientific literature, with limited ecological or behavioral data available beyond the original descriptive work. Ongoing arachnological surveys in the Andean region may reveal additional species or provide further insight into the biology and distribution of Fissiscapus spiders.
