Finote Selam is a town in western Ethiopia, serving as the administrative center of the Mirab Gojjam Zone within the Amhara Region. The name "Finote Selam" translates from Amharic as "Path of Peace" or "Way of Peace."
Geography and Climate
Finote Selam is located in the Amhara Region, approximately 385 kilometers (239 miles) northwest of the national capital Addis Ababa and about 175 kilometers (109 miles) south of Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara Region. It lies at an elevation of approximately 2,333 meters (7,654 feet) above sea level. This high altitude contributes to a generally temperate climate. The town is strategically positioned on a major arterial road connecting central Ethiopia with the northwestern parts of the country.
Demographics
According to the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia, Finote Selam had an urban population of 25,913. The majority of its inhabitants are adherents of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christianity, and Amharic is the predominant language spoken. The surrounding rural areas contribute to the town's cultural and economic landscape.
History
Finote Selam has historical significance, particularly during the 20th century. It has long functioned as a center of local administration and a vital market town for the surrounding agricultural region. During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia (1936-1941), the area around Finote Selam was known as a site of resistance and guerrilla warfare against the occupying forces. Its location on key routes made it strategically important for both administrative control and the operations of resistance movements.
