Fin Dome

Fin Dome is a prominent granite dome located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, within Yosemite National Park, California, United States. Situated at an elevation of approximately 9,644 feet (2,939 meters) above sea level, it is a significant geological feature known for its distinctive shape and as a popular destination for rock climbers.

Geography and Geology

Fin Dome is part of the extensive granitic formations characteristic of the Sierra Nevada batholith, which formed from cooled magma deep beneath the Earth's surface millions of years ago. Subsequent uplift and erosion, largely by glacial activity during the Pleistocene epoch, sculpted the landscape, exposing and shaping domes like Fin Dome. Its name likely derives from its profile, which, from certain perspectives, resembles a large fin projecting from the landscape.

The dome is situated in the high country of Yosemite National Park, east of Clouds Rest and northwest of Tenaya Lake. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada wilderness, including nearby peaks and deep glacial valleys.

Recreation

Fin Dome is particularly renowned among the climbing community. Its sheer granite faces offer numerous technical rock climbing routes, ranging in difficulty and length. Climbers are drawn to its solid rock, alpine setting, and the challenge it presents. Common routes ascend various aspects of the dome, providing diverse climbing experiences.

In addition to climbing, the area around Fin Dome is popular for wilderness hiking and backpacking. It can be accessed via trails that branch off from major routes like the John Muir Trail or the trail leading to Clouds Rest. The approach to the base of the dome typically involves navigating through rugged terrain.

Access

Access to Fin Dome is primarily from the Tioga Road (California State Route 120) during the warmer months when the road is open. Hikers and climbers often start their journey from trailheads near Tenaya Lake or Tuolumne Meadows, requiring a multi-mile hike into the wilderness area. As it is located within a designated wilderness area, permits are typically required for overnight stays.
