Ferrovie della Sardegna

Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS) was a regional railway company that operated a network of narrow‑gauge rail lines on the Italian island of Sardinia. Established in the early 20th century, the company managed both passenger and freight services, primarily on lines built to a 950 mm (3 ft 1 in) gauge.

History
The origins of Ferrovie della Sardegna trace back to a series of private and public railway projects initiated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to serve the island’s interior and coastal areas. In 1922, the various separate concessions were consolidated under the state‑owned Ferrovie della Sardegna, which assumed responsibility for construction, operation, and maintenance of the network.

During the interwar period and after World War II, the company expanded its services, adding branch lines and improving rolling stock. In the 1970s and 1980s, declining passenger numbers and competition from road transport led to the closure of several secondary routes.

Network and Operations
At its peak, the FdS network comprised approximately 1,050 kilometres (650 mi) of track, linking major towns such as Cagliari, Oristano, Nuoro, and Olbia, as well as rural communities. The lines were predominantly single‑track and operated with diesel‑powered multiple units after the gradual electrification of the main standard‑gauge Italian network bypassed Sardinia.

Key services included:

  • Regional passenger trains connecting provincial capitals and coastal resorts.
  • Freight operations transporting agricultural products (e.g., cork, wine, citrus) and minerals from inland mines.

Reorganization and Succession
In the early 21st century, the Italian government pursued a restructuring of regional transport operators. On 1 January 2008, Ferrovie della Sardegna’s commercial activities were transferred to the Sardinian public transport authority, Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST). The infrastructure ownership remained with the state‑controlled Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), while ARST assumed responsibility for passenger services under the brand “Trenino Verde” for tourist routes.

Current Status
The former Ferrovie della Sardegna lines are now operated by ARST and, in some cases, by private heritage railway associations that run historic steam and diesel tours, particularly on scenic sections such as the “Trenino Verde” routes. The original corporate entity no longer exists as an independent company.
