Fengkai County

Definition
Fengkai County (Chinese: 封开县; pinyin: Fēngkāi Xiàn) is an administrative county-level division of the People’s Republic of China, situated in the western part of Guangdong Province. It is governed by the prefecture‑level city of Zhaoqing.

Overview
Fengkai County occupies a largely hilly and forested area bordering the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the west. The county covers an area of approximately 2,300 km² and, according to the most recent national census data available (2020), has a population of roughly 300,000 residents. The county seat is Fengkai Town (封开镇). The local economy is dominated by agriculture—particularly rice, peanuts, and fruit cultivation—and by forestry, mining, and light manufacturing. Transportation links include provincial highways that connect the county with Zhaoqing and neighboring prefectures, as well as a railway branch line that serves freight traffic.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Fengkai” (封开) is derived from the combination of two historic place names: “Feng” (封) and “Kai” (开). Historically, the area was part of the larger Xinhui (新会) and Gaoyao (高要) administrative regions. In the early 20th century, local reforms merged the two former districts, and the new county was named “Fengkai” to reflect this amalgamation. The character “封” historically denotes “to confer” or “to seal,” while “开” means “to open” or “to develop,” suggesting an intention of establishing and opening the region for governance and development.
