Jan hails from the Hasanabad neighbourhood of Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. He belongs to a family of papier‑mâché craftsmen, a lineage that has preserved the craft for several generations.

Specialising in the intricate papier‑mâché techniques introduced to Kashmir from Persian influences centuries ago, Jan operates a family‑run workshop (karkhana) in Hasanabad. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has produced a wide range of decorative and functional objects, including vases, trays, boxes, and ornamental panels, characterized by detailed hand‑painting and the use of traditional motifs.
