Foaled in 2001, Fastnet Rock was by Danehill out of the mare Piccadilly Circus. Trained by Coolmore's Aidan O'Brien in Australia, he quickly rose to prominence, winning the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield at just three years old. He followed this with another Group 1 victory in the Lightning Stakes, also at Flemington. He was renowned for his powerful finishing sprint.
