Farmer Not So John is an album by the American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr., released in 1991 on SST Records. It's the band's sixth studio album. The album marked a further shift away from the more experimental sounds of their earlier work towards a more straightforward, albeit still heavily distorted, rock sound.
The album's title is a playful reference to the popular children's song "Farmer in the Dell." It features J Mascis on lead vocals and guitar, Lou Barlow on bass (despite his limited participation in the recording process due to internal band tensions), and Murph on drums.
Notable tracks on Farmer Not So John include "Get Me," which saw some success as a single, and "Flying Cloud," a slower, more melodic track that showcases Mascis' songwriting versatility. While not considered one of their most groundbreaking or critically acclaimed releases, Farmer Not So John is a solid entry in Dinosaur Jr.'s discography and reflects the band's evolving sound in the early 1990s. The album's release coincided with a period of increasing internal conflict within the band, ultimately leading to Lou Barlow's departure.
