The village is situated in the northern part of the municipal area, close to the borders with North Macedonia and Albania, at an elevation of approximately 750 metres (2,460 ft) above sea level.

Administrative status
Following the 2011 Kallikratis reform of local government in Greece, Fanos became incorporated into the municipality of Florina. It is one of several villages that comprise the municipal unit, which is itself a subdivision of the Florina regional unit.

Geography
Fanos lies on the eastern slopes of the Voras (Nymfaio) mountain range, in a landscape characterized by mixed oak and pine forests and agricultural land. The settlement is accessible via local roads that connect it to the city of Florina, located roughly 12 km to the southeast.

Demographics
According to the 2011 national census, Fanos had a population of 108 inhabitants. The population has historically been involved in small‑scale agriculture, livestock husbandry, and, more recently, modest rural tourism.

History
The name “Fanos” is derived from the Greek word “φάνος” (phanos), meaning “torch” or “lantern.” The settlement’s foundation dates to the early 20th century, when populations from nearby mountainous areas established farms in the valley. During the Balkan Wars and World War II, the area experienced demographic shifts common to the broader Florina region, though specific archival records for the village are limited.

Economy and culture
The local economy remains primarily agrarian, with cultivation of cereals, vegetables, and a small amount of orcharding. Livestock, particularly sheep and goats, contribute to the village’s traditional production of dairy and meat products. Cultural activities are linked to regional customs of Western Macedonia, including the celebration of Orthodox religious festivals and participation in municipal fairs held in Florina.

Transportation
Road access to Fanos is provided by regional highways that connect the village to Florida’s urban center and to the Greek National Road 2 (Egnatia Odos). Public transport options are limited, with occasional bus services linking the settlement to surrounding villages and to the city of Florina.
