Fan Zhiyi (Chinese: 范志毅; pinyin: Fàn Zhìyì; born 6 November 1969) is a Chinese football coach, former professional player, and current Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Football Association. He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Chinese footballers of his generation.
Early Life and Youth Career
Fan Zhiyi was born on 6 November 1969 in Yangpu District, Shanghai, China. He was born into a sports family; his father, Fan Jiulin, was a renowned Shanghai football figure and youth coach, and his mother, Huang Wei, was a former track and field athlete. He began football training at age 10 and enrolled at the Shanghai Institute of Physical Education in 1984. He joined the Shanghai municipal football team in 1987.
Club Career
Shanghai Shenhua (1994–1998)
Fan began his professional career with Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Jia-A League. In the 1995 season, he scored 15 goals as a defender, winning the league Golden Boot and being named Chinese Footballer of the Year. He retained the Footballer of the Year award in 1996. He captained the side to the Chinese FA Cup in 1998.
Crystal Palace (1998–2001)
In 1998, Fan joined English First Division side Crystal Palace alongside Sun Jihai, becoming the first two Chinese footballers to play in English leagues. He made 88 league appearances for the club, scoring 4 goals, and served as captain for a period. His debut match against Sheffield United on 27 September 1998 became the first English league game broadcast live on national television in China, with an estimated international audience of 500 million.
Dundee (2001–2002)
After helping China qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Fan transferred to Scottish Premier League side Dundee for £350,000 in October 2001. He made 14 league appearances, scoring 2 goals.
Later Career (2002–2006)
Fan had brief spells with Shanghai COSCO Huili (loan), Cardiff City (English Second Division), Buler Rangers (Hong Kong), Shanghai Zobon, and Hong Kong Rangers. He retired from playing in July 2006.
International Career
Fan made his senior debut for China in 1992. He earned 106 caps and scored 17 goals for the national team. He was a key member of the squad that qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup — China's first World Cup appearance — and played in the tournament. He also represented China at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 AFC Asian Cups, and won a silver medal at the 1994 Asian Games and a bronze at the 1998 Asian Games.

In 2020, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Football Association and was re-elected in 2022. He has also served as technical director at the Genbao Football Base.
Other Activities
Fan has appeared in Chinese variety shows and television dramas, including the acclaimed series Blossoms Shanghai (2023). In 2024, he gained attention on social media for correctly predicting all eight round-of-16 results at the UEFA European Championship.
