Fall River Road

Definition
Fall River Road is a historic mountain highway located within Rocky Mountain National Park in north‑central Colorado, United States. It traverses the continental divide between the town of Grand Lake and the Trail Ridge Road corridor, providing a seasonal scenic route through alpine terrain.

Overview
Constructed between 1913 and 1914, Fall River Road was the first automobile crossing of the continental divide within the park. The road was engineered as a narrow, winding gravel and later paved pathway that climbs to an elevation of approximately 10,800 feet (3,292 m). Because of its steep grades, tight switchbacks, and exposure to severe winter weather, the highway is typically closed from late October through May. When open, it serves as a recreational drive for tourists and as a historic attraction, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and the Fall River itself.

Etymology/Origin
The name derives from the Fall River, a tributary of the Fraser River that runs parallel to portions of the roadway. The river was named by early trappers and settlers for the series of waterfalls and cascades present along its course. The road’s designation reflects its geographical association with this watercourse.
