Fabrizio Meoni (8 March 1957 – 11 January 2005) was an Italian professional rally raid motorcyclist and former multiple winner of the Dakar Rally. Born in Castelfranco Veneto, Veneto, Italy, Meoni began his motorsport career in the 1970s, initially competing in motocross and enduro events before transitioning to long-distance rally raids.
Rally Career
Meoni’s prominence in rally raid competition emerged in the 1990s. He made his Dakar Rally debut in 1995 and achieved notable success in the following years:
- 1998 – Finished 2nd overall in the motorcycle category.
- 2001 – Won his first Dakar Rally in the motorcycle class riding a KTM 450.
- 2002 – Secured a consecutive Dakar Rally victory, again on a KTM 450.
- 2003–2004 – Achieved multiple podium finishes in other international rally events, including the Rallye des Pharaons and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.
Throughout his career, Meoni was recognized for his endurance, navigation skill, and technical proficiency. He contributed to the development of rally raid motorcycles, particularly through his collaboration with KTM’s racing division.
Death
On 11 January 2005, Meoni suffered a fatal crash during the 2005 Dakar Rally in the Mauritanian Sahara. While leading the race, his motorcycle collided with a boulder, resulting in severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Following his death, the motorcycling community and the Dakar organizers commemorated his contributions to the sport.
Legacy
Meoni’s achievements have left a lasting impact on rally raid motorcycling. He is remembered for his two Dakar victories and his role in promoting Italian participation in international rally events. In 2005, the “Fabrizio Meoni Memorial” award was established to honor outstanding performance in rally raid competitions. His career continues to be cited as a benchmark for aspiring rally racers.
