FC Spartak Tambov (Russian: ФК «Спартак» Тамбов) is a Russian professional football club based in Tambov, Tambov Oblast, Russia. The club was founded in 2022 as a re-establishment of Tambov's historical "Spartak" moniker, following the dissolution of its predecessor, FC Tambov. It currently competes in the Russian Second League Division B, the third tier of Russian football.
History
The football history of Tambov has seen various clubs represent the city. The name "Spartak Tambov" itself has a long lineage, with an original club existing under this, or similar names (such as "Pishchevik" or "Revtrud"), for many decades until its disbandment in 2013.In 2013, a new club, FC Tambov, was established. This club rapidly ascended through the Russian football pyramid, achieving promotion to the Russian Premier League for the 2019–2020 season. Despite its brief period in the top flight, FC Tambov faced severe and persistent financial difficulties, ultimately leading to its dissolution in May 2021.
Following the void left by FC Tambov's demise, a new professional club was formed in 2022, adopting the traditional name FC Spartak Tambov. This initiative aimed to restore professional football to Tambov and build upon the city's rich sporting heritage. The new FC Spartak Tambov was subsequently admitted to the Russian Second League Division B for the 2023–24 season, marking the beginning of a new chapter for professional football in the region.
