FC Smit

Izak Stephanus "FC" Smit (born 28 June 1957) is a former South African rugby union international player. Primarily a lock, he was a prominent figure in South African rugby during the 1970s and 1980s.

Early Life and Career Smit was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He began his rugby career playing for his school, Pretoria Boys High School, where he already showed considerable promise. He then went on to represent the University of Pretoria.

Provincial Rugby Smit played his provincial rugby for Northern Transvaal (now known as the Blue Bulls). He was a key player for the union during a highly successful period, contributing to numerous Currie Cup victories. Known for his powerful scrummaging, lineout jumping, and work rate around the field, he became a stalwart of the Northern Transvaal pack.

International Career Smit made his debut for the South African national team, the Springboks, in 1980 against the British & Irish Lions. He earned 15 Test caps for the Springboks between 1980 and 1986. During his international career, he played against various touring sides, including the British & Irish Lions, the New Zealand Cavaliers, and other national teams. His career spanned a period when South Africa was experiencing international sporting isolation due to apartheid, limiting the number of international matches played.

Playing Style Smit was renowned for his physical presence, strength, and durability. As a lock, he was an integral part of the set-piece, particularly effective in the lineout and the scrum. He was also known for his tireless work ethic in open play, contributing with carries and tackles.

Post-Playing Career After retiring from professional rugby, Smit remained involved in the sport in various capacities, though primarily outside of direct playing or coaching roles. He is remembered as one of the strong and dedicated locks of his era in South African rugby.
