FC Jūrmala was a professional football club based in the city of Jūrmala, Latvia. Established in 2008, the club competed in the top tiers of the Latvian football league system until its dissolution in 2014.
History and Performance
FC Jūrmala began its competitive history in the Latvian First League (1. līga). Following a second-place finish in the 2010 First League season, the club earned promotion to the Latvian Higher League (Virslīga), the country's top division. The club's most successful period occurred shortly after promotion; in the 2011 Virslīga season, FC Jūrmala achieved a fourth-place finish, which remained the highest league ranking in the club's history.
The club played its home matches at the Slokas Stadium, a multi-use facility in Jūrmala with a capacity of approximately 2,500 spectators.
Decline and Dissolution
The club's stability began to deteriorate in 2013 due to mounting financial difficulties. By the 2014 season, these issues became critical, leading to the club's inability to pay player salaries and meet administrative obligations. As a result, the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) penalized the club with multiple points deductions throughout the season.
In addition to financial insolvency, the club was subject to investigations regarding match-fixing. These controversies, combined with poor on-field performance, resulted in FC Jūrmala finishing last in the 2014 Virslīga season. Following their relegation, the club was unable to secure a license for the subsequent season due to its financial status and was officially dissolved.
Distinction from Other Clubs
FC Jūrmala is historically distinct from other football entities based in the same region:
- FK Jūrmala (later FK Jūrmala-VV): A separate club founded in 2003 that also competed in the Virslīga before eventually moving to Riga and dissolving.
- FK Spartaks Jūrmala: A club founded in 2007 that became a prominent fixture in Latvian football, winning multiple league titles.
