Evgenii Przhevalsky

Evgenii Mikhailovich Przhevalsky (1844–1925) was a Russian mathematician and pedagogue known for his contributions to secondary mathematical education. He was the younger brother of the notable geographer and explorer Nikolai Przhevalsky.

Born in the Smolensk Governorate of the Russian Empire, Przhevalsky attended Moscow University, where he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1866. His professional career was primarily dedicated to the teaching of mathematics at various educational institutions, most notably at the 2nd Moscow Gymnasium.

Przhevalsky is best recognized for authoring numerous mathematics textbooks and problem collections that became standard materials within the Russian and early Soviet educational systems. His works focused on algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry. His "Collection of Problems in Algebra" was particularly influential, undergoing multiple revisions and staying in use for decades due to its systematic structure and pedagogical utility.

In addition to his textbook authorship, Przhevalsky was involved in the development of curricula and teaching methodologies for schools. He died in Moscow in 1925 and was interred at the Novodevichy Cemetery. His legacy remains tied to the history of Russian mathematical pedagogy.
