Everclear is an American rock band formed in 1991 in Portland, Oregon. The group was founded by vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter Art Alexakis, who remains the sole continuous member. The original lineup that achieved commercial success comprised Alexakis, bassist Craig Montoya, and drummer Greg Eklund.
History
- 1991–1994: Formation and early releases – After Alexakis relocated from California to Portland, he assembled the band and recorded a series of independent releases. Their debut studio album, World of Noise (1993), was issued on the independent label Tim/Kerr Records and attracted regional attention.
- 1995–1997: Breakthrough – Everclear signed to Capitol Records and released Sparkle and Fade (1995), which yielded the hit single “Santa Maria” (later retitled “Santa Monica”) and achieved multi‑platinum certification. The follow‑up, So Much for the Afterglow (1997), produced the singles “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” and “Father of Mine,” and propelled the band to mainstream prominence.
- 2000–2003: Continued output and lineup changes – The double‑album project Songs from an American Movie (Vol. One: Learning How to Smile and Vol. Two: Good God, both 2000) marked a stylistic shift toward pop‑rock. Drummer Greg Eklund departed in 2003 and was replaced by former Pearl Jam touring drummer Davey French. Bassist Craig Montoya left in 2003; subsequent bassists included Sean Winchester and later Davey French (who also handled keyboards).
- 2004–present: Later releases and touring – Everclear released Slow Motion Daydream (2005) and The Vegas Years (2008). After a period of reduced activity, Alexakis revived the group with new members and issued Invisible Stars (2012), Black Is the New Black (2015), and Wanderer (2022). The band continues to tour extensively, primarily performing a mix of classic hits and newer material.
Musical style and influences
Everclear’s music is characterized by melodic alternative rock with elements of power pop, post‑grunge, and folk‑rock. Lyrical themes often address personal struggle, addiction, and social commentary, reflecting Alexakis’s autobiographical experiences.
