Everard de Jong

Everard de Jong (born 1958) is a Dutch Roman Catholic prelate who has served as an auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Roermond since 2020.

Early Life and Education Everard Johannes de Jong was born on July 4, 1958, in Schaesberg, Netherlands. He undertook his philosophical and theological studies at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned a licentiate in dogmatic theology.

Ecclesiastical Career De Jong was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Roermond on May 28, 1988. Following his ordination, he served in various capacities within the diocese:

  • From 1988 to 1993, he worked as a chaplain in Brunssum.
  • He returned to Rome to continue his studies in dogmatic theology from 1993 to 1999.
  • Upon his return to the Netherlands, he joined the faculty of the Rolduc seminary as a lecturer in dogmatic theology.
  • In 1999, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Roermond, a key administrative role he held for over two decades. During this period, he also served as a canon of the cathedral chapter.

Auxiliary Bishop On May 27, 2020, Pope Francis appointed Everard de Jong as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Roermond, assigning him the titular see of Cariana. He was consecrated a bishop on July 4, 2020, on his 62nd birthday, by Bishop Harrie Smeets of Roermond, with Bishop Frans Wiertz and Bishop Rob Mutsaerts serving as co-consecrators. As an auxiliary bishop, he assists the diocesan bishop in the pastoral governance and administration of the diocese.
