Evan Gershkovich (born 26 October 1991) is an American journalist who has worked for The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) since 2015. He is known for covering business and economics, particularly in Russia and the former Soviet Union. In March 2023, Gershkovich was detained by Russian authorities in Moscow and subsequently charged with espionage, a development that attracted extensive international attention and diplomatic engagement.
Early life and education
Gershkovich was born in New York City, United States. He attended the Dalton School, a private preparatory school in Manhattan, before enrolling at Georgetown University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) with a concentration in International Politics in 2014.
Career
After graduating, Gershkovich joined The Wall Street Journal as a reporter in the Washington, D.C., bureau, covering political and economic issues. In 2015, he transferred to the WSJ’s Moscow bureau, focusing on Russian business, technology, and energy sectors. His reporting has appeared in the paper’s “Money & Investing” and “Business” sections, and he has contributed to WSJ’s coverage of Russian sanctions, state-owned enterprises, and the technology industry.
Detention and legal proceedings
On 29 March 2023, Russian security services detained Gershkovich at the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow after he arrived from the United Arab Emirates. Russian authorities announced that he was under investigation for alleged espionage, specifically accusing him of collecting classified information about a Russian military-industrial facility. The U.S. State Department and the WSJ have repeatedly asserted that Gershkovich was conducting legitimate newsgathering activities and denied any espionage allegations.
Gershkovich was placed under house arrest in Moscow pending trial. In June 2023, Russian prosecutors formally charged him with espionage, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment under Russian law. Gershkovich is married to Liza Ottenberg, a fellow journalist. The couple has a daughter, born in 2022. He is fluent in Russian, a skill that facilitated his reporting from Russia.
