Taxonomic classification
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Lepidoptera

General description
Eupselia is a genus of small to medium-sized moths known primarily from the Australasian region, especially Australia. Members of the genus exhibit the typical morphological features of gelechioid moths: slender bodies, narrow wings with subtle patterning, and scaled antennae. Detailed morphological characters used to differentiate Eupselia from related genera include wing venation patterns, genitalia structures, and scaling of the head and thorax, as described in Meyrick’s original diagnoses and subsequent revisions.
Distribution
Records for Eupselia are concentrated in Australia, with documented occurrences in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Additional, less frequent reports exist from New Zealand and some Pacific islands, though these are not universally accepted without further verification.
Species diversity
The genus contains several described species (exact number varies with taxonomic revisions). Representative species that have been reliably cited in peer‑reviewed literature and major lepidopteran databases include:
- Eupselia carpocapsella (Meyrick, 1880)
- Eupselia pythiaria (Meyrick, 1881)
- Eupselia triferana (Meyrick, 1886)
(For a complete and up‑to‑date species list, consult the Global Lepidoptera Names Index, the Australian Faunal Directory, or recent taxonomic revisions in scholarly journals.)
Ecology and life history
Larval host plants are not comprehensively documented; however, some observations suggest that larvae feed on the foliage of various native Myrtaceae species. Adult moths are nocturnal and are attracted to light, a behavior typical of many Gelechioidea. Detailed ecological studies remain limited.
Taxonomic notes
The placement of Eupselia has been subject to revision. Earlier works placed the genus within the family Oecophoridae. More recent phylogenetic analyses of Gelechioidea, using both morphological and molecular data, have led to its current inclusion in Depressariidae by several major lepidopteran authorities (e.g., the Natural History Museum’s “LepIndex” and the Australian Faunal Directory). Ongoing research may further refine its familial assignment.
