Eugene Ulrich

Eugene Ulrich (born 1938) is an American scholar of biblical and Near Eastern studies, particularly noted for his contributions to the research, translation, and publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He earned his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago in 1967.

From 1977 until his retirement in 2009, Ulrich served as a professor of religion at the University of Michigan, where he also directed the university’s Dead Sea Scrolls Institute. He has held prominent editorial roles, including co‑editing The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation (1999) and serving on the editorial board of the Discoveries in the Judean Desert series, which publishes official facsimile editions of the scrolls.

Ulrich’s scholarship has focused on the textual criticism of the scrolls, scribal practices, and the relationship between the scrolls and Second Temple Judaism. He has authored and contributed to numerous articles and monographs on these subjects, influencing both academic and public understanding of the scrolls.

He is recognized as a leading figure in the field of Dead Sea Scrolls studies, with a career spanning several decades of teaching, research, and publication.
