Description
Eudistylia polymorpha is a marine polychaete worm belonging to the family Sabellidae, commonly referred to as feather duster worms. Adults construct a tubular dwelling composed of mucus and sediment particles, which is anchored to hard substrates such as rocks, shells, and artificial structures. The worm extends a pair of feathery branchial crowns (radioles) from the tube opening for filter feeding and respiration. The radioles are banded with alternating dark and light pigmentation, giving the appearance of a feathered plume. Adult individuals typically reach lengths of 10–30 cm, including the tube, with the radiolar crown extending 2–5 cm beyond the tube opening.
Distribution and Habitat
E. polymorpha occurs along the temperate coasts of the eastern Pacific Ocean, ranging from Alaska, United States, to Baja California, Mexico. It inhabits intertidal and subtidal zones, commonly found from the low tide line down to depths of approximately 30 m. The species prefers environments with moderate water flow that facilitates the delivery of suspended organic particles for filter feeding.
Ecology and Behavior
- Feeding: E. polymorpha is a suspension feeder. Cilia on the radioles capture planktonic algae, detritus, and microscopic organisms from the water column, which are then transported to the mouth.
- Reproduction: Like many sabellid polychaetes, the species is gonochoric (separate sexes). Gametes are released into the water column during spawning events, where external fertilization occurs. Larvae are planktonic trochophores that eventually settle and metamorphose into benthic juveniles that begin tube construction.
- Predation and Defense: The worm can retract rapidly into its tube when disturbed, and the tube provides protection against predators such as fish and crabs. Some individuals display bright coloration on the radioles, which may serve as a warning or deterrent, though specific functions remain under study.
