Description
Eucalyptus globulus subsp. bicostata is a medium‑to‑large evergreen tree, typically reaching heights of 30–45 m, occasionally exceeding 50 m. The bark is smooth, shedding in ribbons, and displays a grey‑white to pale brown coloration. The adult leaves are opposite or slightly alternate, lanceolate, glossy green, and measure 10–20 cm in length. Young foliage is sessile and densely covered with fine, white hairs.

The inflorescences are terminal, comprising axillary clusters of 3–7 buds per umbel. Buds are ovoid to conical, with a prominent operculum that is longer than the floral cup. Flowers are white, appearing most prolifically in the austral summer (December to February). The fruit is a woody capsule, barrel‑shaped to ovoid, with two distinct longitudinal ridges (hence the epithet “bicostata” meaning “two‑ribbed”).

Distribution and Habitat
The subspecies is endemic to southeastern Australia. Its natural range extends from the coastal districts of New South Wales south of the Shoalhaven River, through the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, into Victoria where it occurs in the Otway and Gippsland regions. It favours moist, fertile soils on slopes and ridges, often in wet sclerophyll forests and montane woodlands.

Ecology

  • Seed Dispersal: Wind‑dispersed capsules open after fire or during dry periods, releasing numerous small seeds.
  • Fire Adaptation: Possesses a lignotuber and epicormic buds that enable post‑fire regrowth; seed release is often triggered by fire.

Uses

  • Timber: The wood is straight‑grained, moderately hard, and used in construction, plywood, and pulp production.
  • Essential Oil: Leaves contain high levels of 1,8‑cineole (eucalyptol); the oil is harvested for medicinal, aromatic, and industrial applications.
  • Ornamental: Occasionally planted in parks and large gardens for its rapid growth and shade provision.

Conservation Status
The subspecies is not listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List and is classified as “Least Concern” in Australian state conservation assessments, owing to its relatively broad distribution and stable populations. Localized threats include land clearing for agriculture and urban development, as well as altered fire regimes.

Taxonomic History
Originally described as Eucalyptus bicostata by Joseph Maiden and William Blakely in 1921, the taxon was later reduced to a subspecies of E. globulus by L.A.S. Johnson & K.D. Hill in 1992 following morphological and chemical analyses that demonstrated close affinity with the E. globulus complex.
