Estreito is a municipality located in the state of Maranhão in the Northeast region of Brazil. It is situated in the microregion of Chapadinha, approximately 310 km south‑west of the state capital, São Luís. The municipality covers an area of about 1 250 km² (482 sq mi) and lies at an elevation of roughly 150 m (492 ft) above sea level.
History
The settlement that became Estreito originated in the early 20th century, primarily as a farming community. It was officially created as a district of the neighbouring municipality of Chapadinha in 1948 and later achieved municipal emancipation on 26 May 1962, when it was separated from Chapadinha and installed as an autonomous municipality.
Demographics
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) 2022 estimate, Estreito had a population of approximately 24 800 inhabitants, resulting in a population density of around 20 inhabitants per km². The demographic profile is predominantly composed of mixed‑race (pardo) and white residents, reflecting the broader ethnic composition of the state of Maranhão.
Economy
The local economy is largely based on agriculture and livestock. Main agricultural products include soybeans, corn, beans, and rice, cultivated both for local consumption and for export to other regions of Brazil. Cattle raising, particularly for meat production, also represents an important economic activity. Small‑scale commerce and public services constitute additional sources of employment.
Infrastructure
Estreito is accessed primarily by the state highway MA‑215, which connects the municipality to Chapadinha and other nearby towns. Public services include primary and secondary schools, a health clinic (Centro de Saúde), and basic municipal administration facilities. The municipality does not possess an airport; the closest commercial airport is the Senador Petrônio Portella Airport in Imperatriz, Maranhão.
Geography and Climate
The municipality lies within the transition zone between the Amazonian forest and the cerrado (savanna) biome, featuring a mix of forested areas and open pastures. Estreito experiences a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw), characterized by a distinct wet season from December to May and a dry season from June to November. Average annual precipitation is about 1 500 mm, and mean temperatures hover around 26 °C (79 °F) throughout the year.
Culture and Tourism
Cultural life in Estreito reflects typical Maranhão traditions, including religious festivals such as the feast of the patron saint, São Sebastião, celebrated annually in January. The municipality hosts local fairs and markets that highlight regional crafts, food, and music. Tourism is modest, with visitors primarily attracted to the rural landscape and community events.
Administrative divisions
Estreito is subdivided into several districts and localities, the most notable being the urban center (the municipal seat) and the surrounding rural districts of Água Branca, São José, and Santa Luzia.
