Estella Canziani (1860 – 1939) was a British painter, illustrator and author best known for her water‑colour paintings and written studies of Italian folk costumes and architecture.
Overview
Born in London on 23 May 1860, Canziani received artistic training at the Royal Academy Schools and later in Italy, where she spent much of her professional life. Her work combined artistic skill with ethnographic interest, documenting regional dress, buildings and customs, particularly in Tuscany and other parts of central Italy. She exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Society of Women Artists, and her illustrations appeared in several contemporary publications. In addition to visual art, Canziani authored a number of books, including “Costume of the Italian Provinces” (1910) and “The Little Witch” (1915), which combined narrative with illustrated observations of local culture. She died in London on 14 February 1939.
