Esparza (officially known as Esparza de Salazar, and co-officially in Basque as Espartza Zaraitzu) is a town and municipality located in the province and autonomous community of Navarre, northern Spain. It is situated in the Salazar Valley (Valle de Salazar), within the Merindad de Sangüesa, approximately 78 km from the regional capital of Pamplona.
Geography and Demographics
The municipality covers an area of 26.92 km² and lies at an elevation of approximately 697 meters above sea level. The Salazar River flows through the area from north to south. As of 2025, the population stood at 75 inhabitants (INE), reflecting a long-term trend of depopulation common to many rural Spanish municipalities. The population density is approximately 2.79 inhabitants per km². Winters can be severe, with temperatures occasionally reaching −25 °C, while summer temperatures can exceed 35 °C.
Toponymy
The name "Esparza" is believed to derive from the Basque language, as both towns in Navarre bearing this name lie in historically Basque-speaking areas. The suffix "-tza" (the Basque form is "Espartza") is a common abundancial suffix in Basque. Several etymologies have been proposed for the root "espar," including espartzu (esparto grass), ezpara (horsefly), or a local word for a stake used to support grapevines. The municipality was traditionally called simply Esparza, but informally "Esparza de Salazar" was used to distinguish it from the other Esparza in the municipality of Galar, Navarre. The bilingual official name Esparza de Salazar/Espartza Zaraitzu was adopted in 2006.
History and Notable Figures
- Diego de Artieda Chirino y Uclés, a native of Esparza de Salazar, served as governor of Costa Rica and in 1577 renamed the settlement of "Ciudad de Espíritu Santo" to Esparza, in honor of his birthplace. This is the origin of the city of Esparza in present-day Costa Rica.
- Simeón de Guinda y Apezteguía, a native of the town, became Bishop of Urgell and Co-Prince of Andorra (1714–1737).
Administration
The municipality is governed by a three-member city council. As of the most recent elections, the mayor is Itziar Semberoiz Garralda (Independent), re-elected in 2023. The postal code is 31453.
Culture and Language
The area was traditionally Basque-speaking, specifically using a Biscayan dialect variant. However, Basque usage has declined progressively since the Spanish Civil War due to various social and political factors. The town's patron saint festivals (known as Txerriki Bestak) are celebrated on the first weekend of August.
