Esmeraldas Canton

Definition
Esmeraldas Canton is an administrative subdivision (canton) of Esmeraldas Province in northwestern Ecuador. Its capital is the city of Esmeraldas, which also serves as the provincial capital.

Overview
Located along the Pacific coast, Esmeraldas Canton occupies a coastal lowland area characterized by tropical climate and mangrove ecosystems. According to the 2022 provisional estimates by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC), the canton has a population of approximately 210,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most populous cantons in the province. The local economy is based principally on fishing, agriculture (particularly banana and cacao cultivation), and port activities linked to the city’s harbor. The canton is traversed by several rivers, including the Esmeraldas River, which empties into the Pacific Ocean near the city.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Esmeraldas” derives from the Spanish word esmeralda (emerald). The designation was originally applied to the Esmeraldas River, reportedly because of the greenish hue of its waters observed by early Spanish explorers. The canton inherited its name from the river and the provincial capital.
