Esmeralda Provincial Park (Spanish: Parque Provincial Esmeralda) is a provincial park located in the Misiones Province of northeastern Argentina. It is a protected natural area within the department of San Pedro, Misiones.
Location and Area
The park covers an area of approximately 31,619 hectares (78,130 acres). It is situated within the Alto Paraná Atlantic forests ecoregion, a biodiversity-rich subtropical forest region. The park is located near the town of San Pedro, Misiones, at approximately 26°50′S 54°02′W.
Ecological Significance
Esmeralda Provincial Park serves as the core of the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve. The park protects the Arroyo Yabotí basin and features rugged terrain with abundant forest cover. It contains the Marcio Ayres Biological Station, a research facility used by scientists studying biodiversity in the region.
History
The area was initially established as the Obraje Esmeralda Protected Nature Area by provincial law 2,939 in 1992. It was subsequently designated as a provincial park by provincial law 3,469 in 1997. The park has been proposed as part of the Trinational Biodiversity Corridor, an initiative aimed at providing forest connections between conservation units in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina within the Upper Paraná ecoregion.
Conservation Context
The Yabotí Biosphere Reserve, of which Esmeralda Provincial Park is a core component, also includes the Kaa Yarí Provincial Park, the Guarani Experimental Area, the Papel Misionero Natural Cultural Reserve, and the Moconá Provincial Park, along with private properties that constitute the largest portion of the reserve's area. The park is classified under IUCN category II (national park) and is not generally open to visitors, primarily serving conservation and research purposes.
