Escaudœuvres

Escaudœuvres (French pronunciation: [ekodœvʁ]) is a commune in the Nord department of the Hauts‑de‑France region in northern France. It lies within the arrondissement of Cambrai and the canton of Cambrai, and is a member of the Communauté d'agglomération de Cambrai.

Geography
The commune covers an area of 16.64 km² (6.43 sq mi) and has an elevation ranging from 38 to 77 m (125–253 ft) above sea level. Its coordinates are 50°11′35″ N, 3°15′54″ E.

Administration
As of the 2020–2026 term, the mayor is Thierry Bouteman. The INSEE code for Escaudœuvres is 59206 and its postal code is 59161.

Demographics
According to the 2020 legal population figures from INSEE, the commune had 3,186 inhabitants, giving a population density of approximately 480 inhabitants per km². Historical population data show a peak of 4,234 in 1982, followed by a gradual decline to the present level.

History and Economy
Escaudœuvres is notable for having been the site of the Sucrerie centrale de Cambrai, once one of the world’s largest sugar factories. The plant later operated under the name Sucrerie Tereos d’Escaudœuvres. Production at the sugar factory ceased in 2023; the former industrial site now functions primarily as a logistics facility.
