Description
Erythronium grandiflorum is a perennial herbaceous plant emerging from a single, fleshy, tuberous rootstock. Leaves are basal, typically two per individual, elongated (10–30 cm long), and display a mottled green‑brown pattern resembling a trout’s skin, which gives rise to the common name “trout lily.” The plant produces a solitary, nodding flower on an erect scape (10–45 cm tall). Each flower consists of six tepals; they are white to creamy‑white, sometimes tinged pink at the base, and measure 5–7 cm across, larger than those of most other Erythronium species—hence the epithet “grandiflorum.” The stamens are prominent, with yellow anthers, and the ovary is superior. Blooming occurs in early spring, generally from April to June, depending on elevation and latitude.

Distribution and habitat
The species is native to western North America. Its range includes the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada of the United States (California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and northern California) and extends into the Rocky Mountains of western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta). It occupies subalpine and alpine zones, typically found at elevations of 1,500–3,300 m (5,000–10,800 ft). Preferred habitats are moist, well‑drained meadows, open coniferous forests, snow‑melt streamsides, and talus slopes. The plant often appears in areas with a short growing season and persists under a blanket of snow for much of the year.

Ecology
E. grandiflorum is an early‑season nectar source for a variety of pollinators, especially bumblebees (Bombus spp.) and solitary bees. Its phenology is closely tied to snowmelt; flowering typically begins shortly after the snow recedes. The tuberous roots store carbohydrates that enable rapid leaf and flower development during the brief alpine summer. Seeds are produced in flattened capsules that dehisce to release numerous small seeds adapted for wind dispersal. The species can form clonal patches through vegetative propagation of tubers, though sexual reproduction via seed is the primary means of population expansion.

Cultivation and uses
The plant is cultivated in rock gardens and alpine-themed horticultural settings for its striking early‑spring blooms and ornamental foliage. It requires conditions that mimic its native environment: cool temperatures, partial shade, well‑drained yet consistently moist soil, and a dormant period with dry, cool conditions in winter. Propagation is typically achieved by sowing fresh seed in the fall or by dividing mature tubers in late summer. The species has limited economic use; however, indigenous peoples of its range have historically used the tubers as a food source after roasting or boiling, though the practice is not widespread today.

Conservation status
Globally, Erythronium grandiflorum is not listed as threatened or endangered. Regional assessments vary; some local populations are vulnerable to habitat disturbance from ski resorts, recreational trampling, and climate‑induced shifts in snowmelt timing. Conservation measures generally involve protecting alpine meadow habitats and monitoring populations in areas of high recreational use.
