Common names
No widely recognized common name has been documented in major English-language sources.

Description
Erythrinus erythrinus is a freshwater, ray‑finned fish belonging to the family Erythrinidae. Members of the genus are characterized by an elongated body, a relatively large mouth equipped with conical teeth, and a silvery to brownish coloration that may exhibit faint mottling. Reported maximum total lengths for the species are around 30 cm, though size can vary with habitat and age.

Distribution and habitat
The species is native to South America, occurring in the lowland river basins of the Amazon, Orinoco, and adjacent tributaries. It inhabits a range of freshwater environments, including slow‑moving streams, floodplain lagoons, and marginal zones of larger rivers where vegetation is present.

Ecology and behavior
Erythrinus erythrinus is primarily a carnivorous predator, feeding on smaller fish, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates. It is a solitary ambush hunter, often remaining motionless among submerged roots or vegetation before striking prey.

Reproduction
The species is oviparous, with spawning occurring during the rainy season when water levels rise. Fertilized eggs are deposited on submerged vegetation or soft substrates; parental care has not been documented.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Erythrinus erythrinus; consequently, its conservation status remains formally unassessed. No major threats have been identified in the literature, but habitat alteration due to dam construction, deforestation, and water pollution could potentially impact local populations.

Human use
There are no significant records of commercial fisheries targeting this species. It may be captured incidentally in artisanal nets and occasionally kept in private or public aquaria, owing to its hardiness and relatively modest size.
