Erkki Antila

Erkki Antila (14 June 1954 – 20 August 2023) was a Finnish biathlete. He was a prominent figure in international biathlon during the late 1970s and early 1980s, representing Finland at the highest levels of the sport.

Antila competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, United States. His results included a 5th-place finish in the 20 km individual event and a 12th-place finish in the 10 km sprint.

His most notable international achievements came at the Biathlon World Championships:

  • 1977 Biathlon World Championships (Vingrom, Norway): Antila was part of the Finnish 4 × 7.5 km relay team that won a bronze medal.
  • 1981 Biathlon World Championships (Lahti, Finland): He secured a silver medal in the 10 km sprint event on home soil, a career highlight.

Throughout his career, Antila was also a multiple Finnish national champion in biathlon. After retiring from competitive sports, he remained involved in various capacities, contributing to the Finnish biathlon community. He passed away in August 2023 at the age of 69.
