Erekiteru (エレキテル, Japanese pronunciation [e.ɾeꜜ.kʲi̥.te.ɾɯ]) is the Japanese name for a type of electrostatic generator that was used for scientific experiments in the eighteenth century. The term derives from the Dutch word elektriciteit (“electricity”), reflecting the device’s origin in Western scientific technology introduced to Japan during the period of Rangaku (Dutch studies).

Description and Operation

The erekiteru consists of a small wooden or metal box containing a glass cylinder that is rotated against a gilded pad or other friction surface. The friction generates static electricity, which can be stored in a Leyden jar attached to the apparatus. When discharged, the device produces visible sparks and was employed in demonstrations of electrical phenomena.
