Erbessa cingulina is a species of moth in the family Notodontidae, subfamily Dioptinae. It was first described by the entomologist Francis Walker in 1854.
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Lepidoptera
- Family: Notodontidae
- Subfamily: Dioptinae
- Genus: Erbessa
- Species: E. cingulina
The original description was published under the binomial Dioptis cingulina Walker, 1854, later transferred to the genus Erbessa.
Description
Adult specimens of Erbessa cingulina exhibit the typical morphology of dioptine moths, with slender bodies and relatively broad wings. The wings are generally patterned with shades of brown and gray, often featuring a distinct transverse band or “cingulum” (Latin for “belt”), which is reflected in the species epithet. Detailed morphological measurements (e.g., wingspan, genitalia structure) are documented in specialized taxonomic revisions of the Dioptinae but are not widely reproduced in general reference works.
Distribution
Erbessa cingulina is known from the Neotropical region, with confirmed records from several South American countries, including Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Its range is primarily within lowland tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin.
Habitat and Ecology
The species inhabits forested environments where its larvae are presumed to feed on host plants typical of Dioptinae moths, which often include members of the families Myrtaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Specific host‑plant associations for E. cingulina have not been comprehensively documented in the literature.
Conservation Status
No formal assessment of the conservation status of Erbessa cingulina has been published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). As with many tropical moths, habitat loss due to deforestation could potentially impact local populations, but detailed population data are lacking.
