Overview
The individual dressage competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held in Tokyo, Japan, at the Baji Koen (Equestrian Park). Although the Games were officially titled “2020,” the events took place in July and August 2021 due to the COVID‑19 pandemic postponement.
Competition format
The event comprised three consecutive tests:
- Grand Prix – Served as the first qualifying round for both the individual and team competitions. All entered riders performed a set sequence of movements evaluated by a panel of judges.
- Grand Prix Special – The top 30 riders from the Grand Prix advanced to this round. Scores from the Special determined the finalists for the medal round.
- Grand Prix Freestyle (medal round) – The 15 best riders from the Special performed an individually choreographed routine set to music. The Freestyle scores alone decided the gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Each test was judged on standard dressage criteria, with scores expressed as percentages. The highest percentage in the Freestyle awarded the Olympic title.

Qualification
Riders qualified through a combination of team allocations and individual slots based on the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) Olympic qualification system. Nations could enter up to three athletes if they qualified a team; otherwise, individual places were granted according to world rankings and continental qualifiers.
