The Ents of Fangorn are a fictional race of tree-like beings from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, prominently featured in The Lord of the Rings. They are ancient, sentient creatures, serving as the "shepherds of the trees" and guardians of the forest, particularly the ancient woodland of Fangorn Forest in Middle-earth.
Characteristics and Nature: Ents are among the oldest free peoples of Middle-earth, existing since the First Age. They are slow to act, speak, and think, often taking a very long time to make decisions. Their speech, known as Entish, is a long, sonorous, and complex language, evolving slowly with great deliberation. They are immensely strong and durable, capable of tearing down stone and uprooting trees. Their physical appearance resembles trees, with bark-like skin, leafy hair, and deep, root-like feet. Individual Ents often grow to resemble the specific types of trees they have long tended or resemble. They have a deep reverence for the natural world and are typically peaceful, but are formidable when roused to anger, especially when their trees or forests are threatened.
Habitat: Their primary dwelling place is Fangorn Forest, a vast and ancient forest located near the eastern foothills of the Misty Mountains, between the Gap of Rohan and the Great River Anduin. Fangorn is one of the last remnants of the primeval forests that once covered much of Middle-earth. It is a wild and dangerous place for outsiders, but a sanctuary for the Ents and other ancient forest-dwelling creatures.
Role in The Lord of the Rings: In The Lord of the Rings, the Ents play a crucial role during the War of the Ring. Led by their oldest and most prominent member, Treebeard (known in Entish as Fangorn), they are initially reluctant to become involved in the conflicts of Men and Elves. However, after Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, two hobbits, recount the destruction wrought by Saruman's Orcs on Fangorn Forest (felling trees for fuel for Isengard's industry), the Ents are stirred to wrath. They hold an "Entmoot," a lengthy council, and ultimately decide to march on Isengard, Saruman's fortress. This "Last March of the Ents" results in the destruction of Isengard's walls and works, incapacitating Saruman's power and trapping him in his tower, Orthanc, thus significantly aiding the forces of good.
The Entwives: A melancholic aspect of Ent lore is the loss of the Entwives. The female Ents, or Entwives, had a different nature from the Ents. While Ents loved wild, untamed forests, the Entwives loved to plant, cultivate, and order gardens, growing food plants. They settled in lands east of the Anduin, in an area known as the Brown Lands. However, their gardens were destroyed and the Entwives themselves vanished during the War of the Last Alliance, when Sauron's forces ravaged the land. Despite the Ents' long search, the Entwives were never found, leading to the slow decline and eventual dwindling of the Ent race, as no new Ents could be born. Treebeard expresses the profound sorrow and enduring hope, however faint, of finding them again.
