Enterprise is an unincorporated community located in Douglas Township, Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is situated in the central part of the state, approximately mid-way between the cities of Ankeny and Elkhart. The community is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Historically, Enterprise was established as a coal mining town during the early 20th century. The growth of the settlement was driven by the operations of the Enterprise Coal Company, which managed local mines that served the regional energy demand. During its peak as a mining center, the community supported various local businesses and residences for miners and their families.
A post office was established in Enterprise on July 10, 1903. As the local coal mining industry declined, the population fluctuated, leading to the eventual closure of the post office on August 31, 1928, after which mail service was redirected through neighboring Elkhart.
Geographically, the community is located at approximately 41°45′42″N 93°32′08″W, with an elevation of roughly 984 feet (300 meters) above sea level. In the contemporary era, Enterprise remains an unincorporated residential and agricultural area. It lacks its own municipal government and is governed by the Polk County Board of Supervisors. Transport access to the area is primarily provided by local county roads connecting to Interstate 35 and U.S. Route 69.
