Enrique Wong Pujada (26 June 1941 – 13 July 2024) was a Peruvian politician and medical doctor of Chinese descent. He served as a Congressman of the Republic of Peru representing the electoral district of Callao for two non-consecutive terms: from 2011 to 2016, and from 2021 until his death in 2024.
Early Life and Education
Wong was born in Lima, Peru, on 26 June 1941. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1966 from the Escuela Superior Médica de México (Medical School of Mexico). In 1972, he completed a postgraduate degree in internal medicine at the Mexican Institute of Social Security.
Political Career
Wong's political career began in the 1980s. He served as a councilman for the Callao Province from 1981 to 1983 under the Peruvian Aprista Party. He was later elected as a Deputy representing Callao in the Chamber of Deputies from 1985 to 1990.
In the late 1990s, he was elected as a district councilor for San Martín de Porres under the Fujimorist movement Vamos Vecino, serving from 1999 to 2002.
He ran unsuccessfully for several offices in the 2000s, including Callao regional councilor (2002), Congress for the National Justice party (2006), and provincial mayor of Callao (2010).
In the 2011 general elections, Wong was elected to Congress for the 2011–2016 term under the Alliance for the Great Change ticket. He later left that coalition and joined National Solidarity. During the 2011–2016 term, he served as Second Vice President of Congress from July 2021 to July 2022.
In the 2018 regional elections, he ran for Regional Governor of Callao under the newly formed Podemos Perú party but was not elected, receiving 3.6% of the vote.
He returned to Congress after being elected in the 2021 general elections for the 2021–2026 term, again representing Callao, this time under Podemos Perú. He served from 26 July 2021 until his death.
Medical Career
Between 2003 and 2009, Wong served as the general manager of a family-founded clinic in San Martín de Porres, Lima.
Controversy
In 2011, Wong was accused by his sister of mismanaging the family clinic for personal gain and tax avoidance.
Death
Wong died from pancreatic cancer in Lima on 13 July 2024, at the age of 83. His congressional seat was succeeded by Ariana Orué.
