The suburb is part of the Blacktown area's historical development. It was named after the Emerton family, who were prominent early settlers in the district. William Frederick Emerton arrived in the area in 1861 and served as a local postmaster and storekeeper. The land was primarily used for agricultural purposes until the mid-20th century, when it was developed into residential housing, largely as part of a Housing Commission of New South Wales project during the 1960s and 1970s.
