Elsted railway station was a disused railway station that served the village of Elsted in the county of West Sussex, England. The village itself was located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south-west of the station. The station was situated on the railway line between Petersfield and Midhurst.
History
The station was opened on 1 September 1864 as part of the line operated by the London and South Western Railway. Following the railway grouping of 1923, the station came under the Southern Railway, and later under the Southern Region of British Railways. The station was closed on 7 February 1955, with the last train having run on 5 February 1955.
Infrastructure and current status
The station had a single platform. The station building has since been cleared to make way for an industrial development, although nearby railway cottages remain in existence. The railway hotel built to serve the station still exists as The Elsted Inn. A road bridge that would have crossed the line also remains.
Location and context
The station was located at grid reference SU834206, within the Chichester district of West Sussex. On the Midhurst Railways line, the preceding station was Rogate and the following station was Midhurst (LSWR). The station served the surrounding rural area, and its distance from the village it was named after was typical of many country stations of the period.
