Elsie Arntzen (born 1965) is an American educator and Republican politician from Montana. She served as the 18th Superintendent of Public Instruction of Montana from January 2017 to January 2021. Prior to her statewide office, Arntzen worked as a teacher and school administrator and was active in local education governance.
Early life and education
Elsie Arntzen was born in 1965 and raised in Montana. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Montana and later obtained a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from the same institution.
Career in education
Arntzen began her professional career as an elementary school teacher in Montana. She subsequently held positions as a school principal and a district administrator, gaining experience in curriculum development and school management. She also served on various educational committees and was involved in statewide teacher advocacy efforts.

Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction (2017–2021)
In the November 2016 general election, Arntzen was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, defeating incumbent Democrat Denise Juneau. As superintendent, she oversaw the Montana Office of Public Instruction, implementing policies related to K‑12 education, student assessment, and school accountability. Her tenure emphasized school choice options, increased use of standardized testing, and the promotion of career and technical education programs. -
2020 election
Arntzen sought re-election in the 2020 race but was defeated by Democratic candidate Melissa Romano. Following the election, she completed her term in January 2021. -
Subsequent public service
After leaving the superintendent office, Arntzen was appointed to the Montana Public Service Commission in 2022, where she participates in regulating utilities and overseeing energy policy within the state.
