Else Holmelund Minarik

Else Holmelund Minarik (June 15, 1922 – July 12, 2012) was an American author of children's picture books, best known for creating the “Little Bear” series, which has remained in continuous print since its first publication in 1957.

Early life and education
Minarik was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to American parents. The family returned to the United States when she was a child, and she grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. After graduation, Minarik worked as a home economics teacher and later as a public school educator in the New York City school system.

Literary career
Minarik's entry into children's literature began with a friendship with illustrator Maurice Sendak, who illustrated her first book, Little Bear (1957). The story follows a young bear and his mother through simple, rhythmic prose that emphasizes the everyday wonders of childhood. The success of Little Bear led to a series of sequels, including Father Bear, Little Bear’s Friend, and Little Bear’s Visit (all illustrated by Sendak). The Little Bear books have been translated into numerous languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.

In addition to the Little Bear series, Minarik authored several other picture books, such as Bobbie’s Stories (1974) and Loud, Loud! Grow! Loud! Lark (1979). She also contributed to educational materials and anthologies for early readers.

Style and themes
Minarik’s work is characterized by concise, lyrical text suited for beginning readers, combined with illustrations that complement the narrative’s gentle tone. Her stories often explore themes of family, curiosity, and the simple pleasures of daily life.

Awards and recognition

  • 1960: Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Little Bear
  • 1964: Newbery Honor nomination for Father Bear (Honorable Mention)
  • 2000: Induction into the Children’s Literature Association Hall of Fame (posthumously recognized)

Later life and legacy
Minarik retired from teaching in the early 1980s to focus on writing. She lived in New York City until her death in 2012 at the age of 90. The Little Bear books continue to be used in early literacy programs and have inspired adaptations, including a 1990s animated television series produced by Disney Television Animation.
