Ellef Ringnes

Ellef Ringnes (11 May 1842 – 25 March 1929) was a Norwegian businessman, industrialist, and philanthropist best known as a co‑founder of the Ringnes brewery, one of Norway’s largest and longest‑standing brewing companies.

Early life and education
Born in Krødsherad, Buskerud, Norway, Ellef Ringnes was the son of farmer and brewmaster Anders Ringnes and his wife. He pursued commercial training in Christiania (now Oslo), after which he entered the family’s brewing trade.

Business career
In 1876, together with his brother Amund Ringnes and a consortium of investors that included the prominent businessman and politician Johan H. Andresen, Ellef Ringnes established Ringnes Bryggeri (Ringnes Brewery) in Oslo. The brewery quickly expanded under the brothers’ management, becoming known for high‑quality lagers and ales. By the early 20th century, Ringnes had grown into a dominant force in the Norwegian beverage market, employing thousands and contributing significantly to the nation’s industrial development.

Philanthropy and cultural involvement
Ringnes was an active patron of the arts and sciences. He and his brother financed several cultural institutions, including Oslo’s National Museum and the newly created Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. They also supported scientific expeditions, most notably sponsoring the 1899–1902 Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition led by Carsten Borchgrevink, which resulted in the naming of the “Ringnes Islands” in his honor.

Public service and honors
Ellef Ringnes held various positions in civic organizations, serving on the board of the Oslo Chamber of Commerce and participating in municipal affairs. For his contributions to Norwegian industry and society, he was decorated with the Order of St. Olav, a Norwegian order of chivalry.

Personal life
Ringnes married Karen Margrethe Bøhmer in 1867. The couple had several children, many of whom continued involvement in the family business. He resided in Oslo for most of his adult life.

Legacy
The Ringnes name remains prominent in Norway’s brewing industry; the original Ringnes Brewery eventually merged with other breweries to form larger conglomerates, yet the brand persists. Ellef Ringnes is remembered for his role in modernizing Norwegian brewing, his patronage of cultural and scientific endeavors, and his influence on Norway’s economic growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
